Fall to Winter Capsule Style
While partial to spring and summer weather, fall might just be my favorite for timeless staples. It tends to be the season I focus on adding high-quality essentials to my collection. As fall staples can often interchange throughout the seasons (e.g. pairing your favorite sweaters with shorts for cooler summer days or tossing on your favorite layers for spring evenings), I’ve also noticed the benefits of putting a greater focus on classic silhouettes and neutral basics.
It’s amazing to reach into your closet and find items you love that are still in great shape, season after season, year after year. That’s why I’ve personally loved a “capsule” focus and leaning into classic style staples.
While no two “capsule wardrobes” are truly alike (that’s the point, after all, they should work for you, your own unique style, lifestyle, climate, etc), I wanted to curate an assortment of tried and true wardrobe style staples to take you through the fall season and beyond.
Without further ado, these are some of the top pieces that get the most wear in my wardrobe.
The Cashmere Tee
A go-to for layering, a simple tee in cashmere adds texture without the bulk. This staple will add a luxe feel and a bit more warmth than your usual t-shirt & I’ve opted for an assortment of colors: black, white and camel.
The Striped Sweater
The epitome of Parisian, this goes-with-everything staple looks instantly effortless and has endless styling options. A true classic.
The Grey Sweater
A grey tone helps any outfit feel instantly relaxed, effortless and casual.
The Camel Crewneck
The “it color” of the season, a sweater in this hue adds warmth to any ensemble. I gravitate towards crewneck styles for a silhouette that feels more polished than relaxed.
The White Cable Knit
A goes-with-everything favorite, chunky knits in white or ivory tones (even oatmeal) feel fresh yet cozy from daytime to holiday.
Light Denim
Whether skinny or straight, a light wash jean tends to add an effortless, lived-in feel to any outfit, yet they can still be dressed up or down with ease.
Black Denim
Another casual to dressy staple and a favorite paired with black boots for the season.
WHITE DENIM
To add a fresh feel to any outfit + the perfect base for any winter white ensemble. I love a tonal look of all-white topped with a warm fall hue like camel.
TROUSERS
Not just for work, trousers are the perfect alternative to everyday denim. They add instant polish and are a simple way to mix up any look—simply swap in where you would usually wear denim.
ATHLEISURE PANTS
From joggers to wide-leg styles, toss them on for WFH days and more. I gravitate towards ribbed knit styles in a wide leg for a jogger pant alternative that feels a bit more polished and pairs well with ballet flats.
The Trench Coat
Another all-season staple, a trench coat adds polish + structure and can complete any outfit, from day to night.
THE CAMEL COAT
Whether a sweater style or heavier outerwear, this coat is cool, classic and always put together.
THE PRINTED BLAZER
Tossed on with a tee, a blazer adds instant polish and structure to any ensemble + a printed style (think plaid and houndstooth) offers a richer fall feel. Perfect for holiday, as well!
THE LIGHTWEIGHT PUFFER
An essential “throw on and go” style for everyday wear. Love these for dog walks, errands and weekend style that feels comfy yet put together.
THE CASUAL JACKET
Another grab-and-go style for daily wear. Think bombers, shirt jackets and anoraks in neutral tones you can pair with everything.
THE SNEAKER
I tend to prefer a slightly more feminine style (more streamlined, less chunky) to add a relaxed yet polished feel to everyday looks.
THE CASUAL BOOT
Opt for a lighter hue as an everyday style for the season. Living in California, I personally gravitate towards boots on rainy days (I can get away with flats often), so lately I love a rainboot or chunkier style.
THE BALLET FLAT
While not a true winter staple for many climates, this goes-with-everything classic is still a must-have. I’m partial to a slightly square toe in a nude tone for a lengthening effect.
THE CAP TOE FLAT
A cap toe style truly adds a chic feel that instantly takes any outfit to the next level. They’re also a great seamless option to pair with black bottoms.
BLACK (WEATHERPROOF) BOOTS
A classic pair can do double duty from dressy to casual. I love a lower heel and weatherproof style to toss on for rainy days, as well.
BAGS
Easy, classic neutrals to mix and match with any look.
