While I’m never one to rush Thanksgiving and skip straight to decorating for Christmas, I am (without a doubt) a huge holiday fan. One of my favorite ways to get into the holiday spirit at the start of the season is by decorating the house and trimming the Christmas tree. Growing up, it was always a waiting game. We had to wait until the day after Thanksgiving to get our tree. Then we had to wait with the Christmas tree sitting on the front porch in a bath of water until my dad brought it in to decorate. Why? I’m still not 100% sure. Was it to torture us making us wait? Possibly. Was it so the tree would drop its needles outside rather than inside? Maybe. Do I actually really have a clue? Nope! But did it build our anticipation and make us extra-antsy for the holidays? Absolutely!
But when we finally brought that tree into the house (pine needles still coating the floor and all), we couldn’t wait to finally decorate. When we were old enough, I remember my sister and I would excitedly pull out the Christmas boxes from the hall closet, banish my parents to the family room and go to town in the living room. We’d string lights while trying not to get tangled. We’d carefully unbox ornaments, “ooh-ing and ah-ing” over the most sentimental ones. We’d messily eat Christmas cookies (my mom’s famous Mexican Wedding Cakes) dropping powdered sugar crumbles while listening to our favorite Christmas album on repeat: A Very Special Christmas. (we grew up on that Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Run-DMC and Stevie Nicks—listen here).
Giggly and pleased with our handiwork, we’d anxiously call them down (eyes closed and all), welcoming them into our holiday masterpiece. Further oohs and ahs ensued as we’d proudly point out our favorite holiday touches. My dad would help hang the Christmas tree topper, they drank wine, we sang and danced…the fireplace was lit, the room was dreamy, cozy and warm…and it. was. MAGIC.
Those are the memories I reach for every holiday season and those are the memories I want to continue to create. And these are the type of classic-cozy holiday pieces I’m slowly adding to my own collection, so I can do just that.
I’d love to hear any of your own favorite holiday memories and traditions. As always, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read!
